To The Internet Websites: My Responses

The Facebook Riots:
These riots are understandable. Facebook puts out information that should not be given out, or even asked for. On the News Feed, it makes no sense to have to read about all your friends, who goes together, who deleted who as friends, who added applications to their site, and all that unnecessary mess. Facebook wants to make sure you aren’t lying. They even send a comfirmation to the other person(s) stating if you go to their school or if you’re in a relationship with them. I am not a huge fan of Facebook, but I like the fact that I can find all of my old friends from elementary on there. If Facebook didn’t tell people’s business, they wouldn’t have the complaints they do now.

MySpace Faces A Perp Problem:

We all should have seen this coming. Not to be discriminative, but the sex offenders don’t stop until they’ve gotten enough, and as we see, they haven’t gotten enough…. Yet. MySpace is dangerous, and even if they are deleting sex offender’s accounts, they can multiply back; they can even be the staff deleting them out of the system! All of the chatting websites are dangerous: Blackplanet, Facebook, CrushSpot, Tag, Bebo, and your very favorite, MySpace. Everywhere you go there’s someone that’s broken the law, once or twice. Even if the sex offenders get kicked off one site, they can do two things, go to another site and/ or make a new profile. You never know right?

MySpace Finds 29,000 Sex Offenders on its Site

Again, we all should have seen this coming. If you face a perp problem, quite naturally you’re going to face a couple of sex offenders off in that mix, right? They should have expected this; almost all of the United States uses MySpace to meet people, talk to friends, or other stuff. Those sex offenders can pose as your own friend’s name, shoot they could even be one of your friends! That’s terrible, considering the fact that MySpace just got rid of 7,000 and then some accounts that belong to registered sex offenders. You can’t really get rid of them, they just keep coming back, and if you try to block them from somewhere because of their past, then that’s a really big issue that I don’t think MySpace is ready for.

Counting Sex Offenders on MySpace

The only thing I have to say to this is “What the …?” There’s no understanding as to why MySpace has so many problems. If MySpace is that bad, then they should shut down the website and let everyone re-register with them and then watch who registers and who doesn’t, but there’s really no telling what people type down. You could be a 35 year-old man acting to be a 14 year old boy. You never know. I’m just not sure why people in the world have so many problems. Counting sex offenders? How in the world do you do that? I understand why, I’m just not sure how. Well, since their counting sex offenders maybe they need to count how many under aged children are on this site, or how many under cover police officers are on this site. There are more things to look out for then just registered sex offenders.

Questions That Parents May Ask:

Today, lots of children go on chatting websites like MySpace, FaceBook, CrushSpot and other websites that seem to not be all that safe. These things make parents wonder, Is my child safe? I hope that he/she knows about all the dangers out there. Well, since most parents wonder, I’ll wonder with them. So I’ve chosen to ask myself a couple of questions to answer to the best of my knowledge.
- What’s so fun about these websites?
- Do the children know of the dangers that are out there?
- Don’t some of them have younger siblings, and if they do,
then wouldn’t they follow in their older brother’s /sister’s footsteps?
- Are their parents around when they go to these chatting websites?
- Do they know what they are getting themselves into?
- Aren’t these children afraid of getting kidnapped?
- Do they willingly meet people that they do not know in groups or alone?
- Why isn’t the government doing anything about the children chatting on websites?

Since parents have wondered these questions that I have asked myself, I can try my best to answer my own questions on behalf of the parents. The reasons why these websites are fun to children are because of the excitement that comes from doing everything on these sites. You can visit other pages, talk to numerous amounts of people, and even get to talk to your friends, all online. Yes, children are aware of all the dangers that are out there, they just learn to look out for them and expect that there always is a dangerous person outside their doorstep. There’s always a child with a younger sibling. Some siblings follow in the same footsteps as their older brother or sister, but others just wonder what would happen if they tried that. Because of me being a younger sibling to seven sisters and one brother, I understand that some younger siblings can take after older siblings, and others choose to go their own separate ways in life. I’m not really sure if their parents are around when children decide to go to these chatting websites; if parents do know, then children are aware of all the dangers out there, and some parents don’t even know these kinds of websites exist. Willingly meeting people is a whole different story. I don’t think that kids just wake up one day and go Hey; let’s go meet some people, maybe in a group or alone; That’s completely stupid. No kid in their right mind would do that. I think that children have their own instincts. These instincts help most children realize that they shouldn’t do certain things. Either that or it’s God working a way through to the children. So long story short, if children willingly go meet, then most likely, they might go in groups but some decide that they are grown enough to go by themselves. My response to my last questions is, what can the government do about this? They aren’t doing anything and that’s what they’ll keep doing, nothing. The constitution states that people have the freedom of speech, writing, and publicity as much and as loud as they wish to say, do, or anything other way of being a free person. This may help parents more than what I thought at first, but now I’m starting to see that there are a lot of things I’m sure of and this, I’m extremely confident about.

Detroit Public School Closings

As you look at how many Detroit Public Schools are supposed to be closing, it makes you think. “What else happens in these schools? Why is the government not taking action? What else is wrong with these schools?” Well, those are questions that I unfortunately, cannot answer. What I can do is try to give an understanding and my opinion as to why we are going through this.

As everyone knows, by the end of 2007, at least fifty-two Detroit Public Schools should be closed. However, some of these have already closed, but not all. It takes an estimated twenty-two million dollars to actually close these buildings. The amount saved from this annually is about nineteen million dollars; which would not kick in until 2008. Notice I did say annually which means (in my opinion) it will be a while before we see any of this money (district officials in DPS, Detroit News).

It costs more to close the buildings then to actually save money from trying to close these buildings. So what can we do about this? Absolutely nothing, but try to act upon what we feel for the children. It appears that at this time, the only people asking how the children feel are the newscasters.

A 16 year old junior at Redford High named Tanya Trader stated that “They shouldn’t close it down; All the kids would have to go to different schools and that will cause more problems”. Chadsey, Mackenzie, and Redford are among the eight high schools, six middle schools and thirty-eight elementary schools targeted for closing. This leaves about a little more than 20,000 enrolled kids affected as students are shuffled among buildings. School officials said staff at closed buildings will be reassigned to other buildings, but said it would be premature to discuss whether more layoffs are ahead (Detroit News).

I feel that if the district wants to close schools, close the schools we do not need. If there’s a group of elementary schools together, close at least one or two of them in that cluster. I also feel that if the Detroit Public Schools want money, then the state or the government should take over schools. It makes no sense to have to close so many schools because of lousy spenders.

Detroit Public School Closings

With all the DPS closings, the drop out rates in Detroit are tremendously high. Part of this is beacuse of our debt. As we all know, Detroit is in debt, and deep into it too. No one really donates money to DPS and the money we do get doesn't really go far. The money that the schools make from schools lunches, vendors, and other purchaseable items make you wonder where the money is going.

My Letter To Connie Calloway

July 26, 2007

Connie Calloway
3031 West Grand Blvd, Suite 485
Detroit, MI 48202

Dear Mrs. Calloway:

Thank you for taking the time to read my letter, it means a lot to me. The purpose of my letter is to discuss with you the problems that are going to occur when the district closes the Detroit Public Schools that are needed for most students. One problem would be that there can be over crowding in schools, more fighting, brutal violence, and other things that can happen when too many people are together for a long period of time.

The district is closing some schools because of money issues or low enrollment; I understand that, but in order to have some high enrollment, we need to close the schools that do need to be closed. Some high schools have gangs that “represent” other schools and if they transfer to the next high school representing their old school, that can result in a gang-related fight. This happens every day that I have attended school. There’s always some odd reason as to why someone’s fighting because of what someone else feels.

To explain the problem of over crowding in some schools would be an example of the student-teacher ratio. If schools over crowded so much that it becomes a problem, then it makes the student-teacher ratio uneven. If there are too many students in one class, other students cannot learn and some teacher cannot keep all of their students under control. To solve this, you would need to hire more staff workers in that school.

One child named Tonya T. from Redford high school stated that, “they shouldn’t close them. That would just make more trouble”. Also one lady whose name was not identified stated that, “Detroit Public Schools have already taken away the after- school activities, why take anything else”? (Detroit News)

With all of this happening, this makes me very upset, disappointed, and sad. It makes the city’s schools system look bad compared to other school systems. This means that since so many schools are closing, so many kids would have to go away from their friends and travel quite a way to get to that school. I feel that Detroit Public Schools should have already had their problems in Detroit Public Schools solved; this just proves (to me) that the city of Detroit does not have everything organized.

My purpose is to explain to you what is may be going on behind the business of the district and how some people feel about this.
